-year-old paul warren hardis of arlington, virginia. he has been responsible for creating hours of chaos here at one of the world's most prominent hospitals. police say just after 11:00 this morning, a patient's son became emotionally distraught as a doctor explained to him his mother's medical condition. the son then pulled out a gun and shot the doctor. >> collapsed outside the doorway of the room, and mr. davis was last seen running into the room brandishing the handgun in the direction of his mother, who's confined to the bed. >> reporter: hospital employees were alerted to the danger as dozens of patients and employees were evacuated. police secured the eighth floor as they tried to establish contact with davis and allowed business as usual to continue in the rest of the massive complex until police finally determined davis had shot his mother in the head and then took his own life. >> we are treating this case as a murder-suicide and obviously the shooting of the doctor preceding this discovery are. >> dr. david cohen expected to make a full recovery from his shooting and police st
was actually paul warren pardus, age 50 of arlington, virginia. they say he pulled a semiautomatic pistol from his pants and shot the physician in the stomach. >> the doctor collapsed just outside the doorway of the room and mr. davis was last seen running into the room, brandishing the handgun in the direction of his mother who was confined to the bed. >> reporter: fox news and the baltimore sun are identifying the wounded physician as david cohen, an orthopedic surgeon. >> he was talking and everything like that and i mean he looked -- he appears to be fine to me. >> reporter: meantime nobody knew for certain what was happening inside room 873. >> my boss came running in and he told me exactly what happened, that there was a guy running around with a gun and to stay put. >> reporter: the crisis was over around 1:30. >> we were able to see that mr. davis was down on the floor suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and that his mother was also unresponsive in her bed. >> reporter: police calling it a murder suicide. now the alleged gunman's mother has been identified as jean davis, not sure

there. farther to the west, still in the 60s in much of western maryland. panhandle of west virginia and shenandoah valley. it seems almost wintry. these are the current dew points. they are in the 40s. this is the driest day we have had in a long time, since even about have the summer. we have dry weather all the way down to the atlantic beaches too. this continues to come in on some northwest breezes. these are the latest wind gusts. they have been around 20 to 25 miles an hour gusts. as we look at the other temperatures, out of the mountains, still in the low 60s. eastern shore, east of the bay and away from the waters, still near 70 degrees. all this coming from high pressure, which continues to move in off the great lakes. it is assisted by an area of low pressure spinning away over eastern new england and northern new england. that lull combined with this area of high pressure giving us a little bit of blustery wind. these are the remnants of tropic tropical storm hermine. this high pressure is going to hold forth for the next couple of days. some of the moisture will be along
. slow traffic as you work your way south of montrose road to the split. in virginia, northbound i-95 slowing out of dale city trying to head north of the prince william parkway. no accidents, just volume. 66 slows at business 234. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. >>> a speeding suv collides with an ambulance overnight. stacy cohan joins us live with the details. >> reporter: it was a very scary moment for the folk in the ambulance apparently. this happened just around midnight. they were just dispatched heading westbound on marlboro pike. and apparently, investigators were able to watch it all unfold on a dash cam that took video from the ambulance. the suburban was heading the wrong with a just speeding down when it was approaching the ambulance head on. the driver of the ambulance managed to swerve to the left and the suv, the suburban lipped the side of the ambulance, literally shaving half of that ambulance off and then it went another 40 yards, crashed into a brick wall, crashed into a utility pole and flipped up on its roof. all three members in that suv, three men

in virginia are warning people who use onine dating sites this morning after they say a woman was sexually assaulted by a man she met online. according to the loudoun county sheriff's office, 34-year-old john evans met the 37-year-old victim on the site back in june. in july she went to his home where officials say he held her against her will, and sexually assaulted her. sheriff's investigators are now concerned this woman was not evans' first victim. >> a situation like this, it's the same as someone who's been scammed. they don't want the embarrassment of someone knowing they've been scammed so they don't say anything. that's how these perpetrators continue to get by with their crimes. they don't come forward. if anybody is familiar with this person we'd certainly like to hear from them. >> eharmony released a statement saying it's, quote, deeply saddened to hr about this terrible incident. the website also said it immediately closed evans' account and notified all of his matches not to communicate with him. >>> the company that hires metro access drivers is taking a closer look at how
